Note that the space of "cognitive capabilities" includes stuff like knowledge of obscure specific stuff (e.g. knowledge in the heads of people that work at TSMC) and EQ. But you don't necessarily need literally every cognitive capability any human has to be transformative.
AI discourse would be better if people said "cognitive capabilities" or referred to specific capabilities instead of saying "intelligence". The word is ambiguous: some use "intelligence" to mean "literally all cognitive capabilities" while others mean "stereotypical book smarts" This is all to say: AIs with cognitive capabilities that surpass humans in ~every domain are a huge deal, while AIs that do well on exam aren't necessarily a huge deal (except as evidence of more powerful AIs coming soon). In both humans and AIs, doing well on tests doesn't imply all other cognitive capabilities you might care about (though many are correlated) while the full set of cognitive capabilities is extremely important. Like yes, physical appearance matters a bit for success and luck matters quite a bit more, but people who succeed tend to be good at doing things! And (in todays economy) it isn't because fingers are better at typing or something! Both of these are invalid arguments: "AIs good at exams -> AIs intelligent -> these AIs will transform the world" and "define intelligence to mean being good at exams -> being good at exams doesn't mean you succeed -> some say 'extremely intelligent AIs would be transformative' but they're wrong because intelligence doesn't yield success". Don't conflate different meanings of the word intelligent!
Intelligence is what differentiates a lot of tech people from the people they grew up with, so they tend to fetishize it a bit. In reality it's only one of several important factors in determining both individual success and human progress.
