Dominant AI Model Provider Could Charge Far More With Less Competition
Dwarkesh Patel argues that today's pricing may depend less on AI magic than on three top labs keeping each other honest.
In a post on X, Dwarkesh Patel argued that current frontier-model pricing may be unusually restrained because roughly three top AI labs are still competing on quality and margins. He was reacting to Jarred Sumner's post about rewriting Bun in Rust, which Patel cited as an example in making that argument. Patel's point was less "AI is expensive" than a narrower argument about market structure: If one lab clearly pulls ahead, that provider could likely charge much more than it does now.
Seems to suggest that if it stops being the case that there's 3 labs which are all roughly equally good, competing each others margins away, the provider of the best model could probably get away with charging a lot more than they currently are.
