The American Bureau of Shipping has approved the design of a container ship that would run on two molten-salt nuclear reactors, placed at midship, where collision and wave loads are lowest. With no fuel tanks and no funnel, that freed volume carries 15,000 boxes at 25 knots, on a hull sized for the widened Panama Canal.
This is very exciting. I became fascinated with why we don’t have nuclear-powered container ships in 2023. Considering the cost of fuel, emission concentration, lifespan of these ships, and the surprising low number of active vessels, it seemed like a no brainer.
