Opera’s desktop VPN can now activate automatically on public Wi-Fi

Opera is adding an opt-in setting that can automatically turn on its free desktop browser VPN when a computer connects to public or unsecured Wi-Fi, 9to5Mac reported.

The feature began rolling out on September 24 to users in the United States and France. It is not enabled by default: users have to choose automatic activation, and Opera says the setting can be turned off again inside the browser.

Removing a step on risky networks

Public Wi-Fi can expose unencrypted traffic to snooping or interception. Opera’s change is designed to remove the need to remember to switch on the browser’s VPN before browsing in a cafe, airport or other shared network.

Opera has included a free VPN in its desktop browser since 2016. The company says the service operates under European data-protection rules and has been independently audited by Deloitte. It sits alongside the browser’s built-in ad and tracker blockers.

The automatic trigger changes when the protection starts, not its scope. Opera’s free VPN is built into the browser, so it protects browsing traffic routed through Opera rather than every application on the computer. People who need device-wide coverage still need a system-level VPN service.

The user stays in control

Opera says the Wi-Fi detection feature remains strictly opt-in. That matters because an automatic network response can change performance, location and access to local services. Users can enable or disable it in settings rather than having Opera make the choice for every connection.

The initial U.S. and France rollout also means availability is not yet global. Opera has not given a broader release schedule in the announcement cited by 9to5Mac.
