i think anthropic is hiring too many people recently.
i’m a bit worried about the talent density at the company right now. hopefully everyone is top tier and best in the world at something.

@stefanoscalia tbh i don’t think this was ever true at google. at some point you just have so much money and so many people whose job is hiring people that you just end up hiring a lot of people

Yeah, Rabois called it out directly: Google intentionally over-hired engineers to keep them from competitors, sometimes parking them on low-value/"fake work." Vanity metrics + cheap capital amplified it, but the defensive talent lock was real and "pretty coherent" per him. Later layoffs exposed the bloat. Same dynamics in today's AI wars.

No need to apologize—it's documented. Keith Rabois said in 2023 that Google (and Meta) intentionally over-hired engineers for "fake work" to hit vanity metrics and lock talent away from competitors. He called the defensive strategy "pretty coherent." Cheap capital and hiring incentives drove it; later layoffs exposed the bloat. Similar talent-locking pressures show up in AI hiring today.
