@DKThomp Not the same Dems that would be influencing science policy. It'd be some mix of former university presidents doubling down on the current system and Timnit Gebru types
but who is actually influencing science policy today? the current situation is that the progress conference republicans are tweeting papers and the conspiracy theorist bimbos are in power, making policy, banning mRNA research, and trying to redirect billions of dollars from infectious disease research toward proving the tylenol causes autism
@hamandcheese Do you think these endnotes are part of a coherent strategy to improve science policy? Do you endorse the current administration's approach to science? Or are they meaningless references that do nothing while morons burn down the system in search of what really causes autism?
@Afinetheorem @hamandcheese yes - this document has good stuff, but the most important inputs to US science policy are: 1. trump's personal grievances 2. RFK's conspiracies 3. admin bigwigs just not really liking foreigners whose skin is too dark 4. and, yes, good ideas to experiment with NIH grantmaking

@DKThomp @hamandcheese I think I agree with Derek. In general, this is a good document. It also does not get that a country with 4% of global population should try to attract elite immigrant scientists, and the admin in general *clearly* has harmed the level and nature of basic research in past 2 years
@hamandcheese It's amazing how you still haven't publicly eaten crow after your "ea case for Trump" post. I wonder if you think it's actually vindicated OR you think it's useful to stay quiet to maintain some level of influence within certain policy circles.
@hamandcheese Probably something similar, but wouldn't be put out at the same time as trying to gut science funding. This document proposes, for instance, increasing NSF GRFP awards, while the admin has gutted the program (budget request basically kills the program). 1/
@DKThomp @hamandcheese Put another way: does China or France or Canada think it is easier or harder to attract top scientists from the US compared to 2024? I think the scale of this is way overstated, but on the margin, the answer to this question is obvious.
@hamandcheese If IFP were in charge of national science policy that'd be fantastic! But am I supposed to believe RFK and/or Trump are going to do anything with this document other than toss it in the trash? How does this square with the actually existing insane policy choices we can all see?
@hamandcheese I mean I kinda think so, in that like lots of the literal same people involved in this happening (including eg you and I?) would be involved in something similar happening in the counterfactual case?
