I'm with Rick Beato on this. The big AI mills will have their day and go the way of recording studios. There will always be a need for some large AI. A lot of people will use subscriptions. A whole lot of AI will drop into local airgapped use. I will run local as soon as I see a useful build for my work.

Just like with AI today the arrogance of Anthropic (IBM) and OpenAI (DEC) mirrors the arrogance of the computer giants.

They would not even call what we soldered toys, that would come with the Apple Ii.

Today the Dario’s and Sam’s of the world laugh at us with our open source models and mods they never thought of.

It is not a guess where AI will go after they are done with fear games and government manipulation.

We have the fire.

When they are gone we will keep the place warm for you…

Just like with personal computers, the real power and innovation will come from personalised, sovereign AI that individuals and organisations actually own and control. When models can run locally, fine-tune on your own data, and stay private by default, the arrogance of the big closed players starts to look like a temporary phase, not the end state.

@BrianRoemmele I downloaded the 258GB GLM 5.2 and stored it on my terabyte drive JUST IN CASE I am ever able to afford the hardware to actually run in. Stack 'em while we can.....

@BrianRoemmele Even 20+ years back. The GNU world was considered a toy, but most corporate environments had a tool tree with the GNU core utils installed because they were better than what shipped with commercial UNIX.

Today- part of every Linux distribution. Others?... lost to time.

@BrianRoemmele The Altair was a REAL computer, with lights and switches. I could not afford one so started making my own. I had done the PSU, front panel with LEDs and switches and the S100 bus but eventually decided it was too expensive even that way.

@BrianRoemmele I still have a callous on my right index finger from punching in the NorthStar DOS I/O routines for the custom keyboard and display via the front panel on the loaned Altair 8800 I used to learn BASIC. The disk controller would overheat and crash all my boot disks.
