Black Forest Labs has released FLUX 3 Image Klein, a 5.6-billion-parameter image model with open weights.
One model for generation and editing
BFL says Klein can run on a single consumer GPU and supports native 4K output, bounding boxes and “pixel-perfect” editing. Those are the company's claims, not independent test results.
A Hugging Face technical guide documents two checkpoints. The distilled version defaults to 16 inference steps for faster generation, while the base model uses 50 steps with classifier-free guidance and is intended for fine-tuning.
The same Diffusers pipeline handles text-to-image generation, editing from one or more reference images and layout control. For layout work, a prompt can include normalized bounding boxes that specify where an object should appear or where an item from a reference image should move. That gives developers more explicit control than relying on descriptive text alone.
Memory savings come with hardware caveats
Black Forest Labs ships BF16, row-wise FP8 and NVFP4 transformer weights. In Hugging Face's measurements, the NVFP4 version used 13.4 GiB of GPU memory after loading and peaked at 15.3 GiB after inference on an RTX 6000.
