Xbox is also planning a Game Pass overhaul that would let players choose features à la carte, according to people familiar with the strategy cited by Fortune. The proposed tiered setup includes add-ons for console-only games, cloud gaming and multiplayer.

Fortune also describes an internal software dispute: Xbox and Windows teams clashed over what should run Project Helix, and Windows leaders wanted an upcoming handheld to use a trimmed-down version of Windows Home. Sharma's team sought to build and control its own software to get the best gaming performance. According to people briefed on the clash, a senior Xbox executive threatened to scrap the handheld rather than adopt the Windows build. Fortune reports Xbox now largely controls the direction of the project's operating system, though Sharma said the teams still collaborate: “We can’t build Helix on our own.”
