@kevinroose The hatred is rational, even if it does what it says on the tin. Tech bros are largely twats. Ai is aligned with Maga. Most if not all CEOs are filth that should be *much* more afraid. Every backfiring exhaust should make them flinch, no?
@kevinroose @asymmetricinfo I think AI is great. It can already do so much and will be able to do more in the future. However some safety fears have been obvious marketing hype that crowds out legit fears.
@kevinroose Funny how the people loudest about AI being fake have never built anything with it. I assume they tried ChatGPT once, got a bad output, and never touched it again.
@kevinroose Yea, a little tired of that one tbh. Does LLM hallucinate occasionally? I guess so but so infrequent to me, hardly noticeable in my day to day and rarely in coding
@kevinroose Well ai is fake and it’s fancy autocomplete but the safety fears are very real. Society is going to be destroyed by an evil unthinking thing
@kevinroose Yup, doesn’t bode well that so many are still in denial. Models escaping their sandboxes are just a PR stunt to many!
@kevinroose AI Denial and other polarized AI narratives are having a negative impact on AI Literacy... I recently wrote this piece proposing a way to evaluate these kinds of narratives by considering the valence, effectiveness, and trajectory they assign to AI https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.01929
@kevinroose For example, here are four common narratives (Hype, Doom, Denial, and Normalcy) and where they fit in this framework. I don't think any of these narratives accurately describe the current state of AI progress.

the staying power of the "AI is fake, LLMs are fancy autocomplete, safety fears are just marketing hype" narrative is remarkable. it's become the default view of a certain type of cynical smart person, despite being obviously wrong for at least a few years.
@kevinroose Do you think the people making those arguments even truly believe them? It seems more like personal brand curation now than sincere belief.
