Courthouse News Service reports that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed the ban nine days before the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, in which he is seeking reelection. The order takes effect upon publication but needs congressional approval within 120 days to remain in force.

The order calls for betting websites and apps to go offline October 6 and banks to return bettors’ balances October 9–14. The National Association of Games and Lotteries says it is preparing a court challenge; its president said a compensation claim would cover licensing fees and damages, including industry investments.

Reuters reports that Lula also announced a household debt relief program ahead of the election.
