The UK & Europe need a frontier AI lab and we need a lot more compute in Europe as a whole
Google DeepMind's Andreas Kirsch proposes a dedicated frontier AI laboratory for the United Kingdom and Europe to boost regional compute
The proposal sparked European talent retention debates dubbed "Deepmexit".
Many users agree the UK and Europe urgently need a frontier AI lab and more compute as a key missing piece, while others blame talent migration to US companies like Google and the Trump administration.

@BlackHC Deepmexit?

@BlackHC Urgently

@BlackHC yup it makes completely no sense by foreign nationals are working at google, anthropic or openAI. why the hell is Demis Hassabis at Google (USA) as a UK National, knowing this problem will come in the future.

@BlackHC Yes. Like, many months ago. But, bar that, asap…

@BlackHC that is a massive missing piece of the puzzle right now

@BlackHC 1. build compute yesterday 2. get the best people in a frontier ai lab filthy rich building a competitive open source model 3. subsidise enterprises post training specialized models for their use cases on top of that model.

@BlackHC But once a frontier AI lab gets big enough, it gets eaten by another entity.

I can't speculate for him but if you want you be part of the effort that discovers AGI/ASI there is a bit of a prisoner's dilemma where it's unlikely that someone outside the US/without US compute resources will be able to get there, so you have a lock-in effect
Even if in the end, it means you might still get locked out

@Paperviewr @BlackHC Demis is not doing anything wrong. Working at international companies headquarted in the US is not the problem. The Trump administration is the problem here.

@BlackHC investment and policy wise or just the hardware availability? feels like Europe talks about it a lot but execution always lags

@BlackHC whats stopping it though? regulatory hell or just not enough money flowing into the compute?

@BlackHC fair point but where is the capital gonna come from for all that compute
