Yeah this is significantly better than Codex's subagent implementation. Turns out code is good, and sol is good at writing code! Programmatic orchestration still feels like the "only reasonable way" and I hope Codex catches up soon. https://x.com/theo/status/2075765314483376285/photo/1
@theo cascading ultra on every lil subagent is insane token hemorrhage ngl like why does the errand boy need max effort too 💀
@theo yeah running ultra with ultra subagents is a death sentence for usage limits
@theo I think the bigger issue is the unsafe destruction of files. It’s simply unacceptable
@theo sub agents in 5.6 are totally fucked
@theo very good to know, thanks.
If you set gpt-5.6-sol to "ultra", all the subagents it spawns will also be set to ultra. IMO this is a fumble. Causes massive token burn for no good reason. At the very least, I should be able to hard-set the subagent effort level to "medium". Claude Code is far ahead here https://twitter.com/evi77ain/status/2075445272013095033
To the person trying to community note me: Manually defining roles in your config files (that require a full reset of Codex btw) is NOT a reasonable expectation or alternative to true dynamic workflows. The whole point is that the model can right-size the subagent orchestration depending on the task.
Still digging in, but it appears that 5.6 might trigger an auto-upgrade to the v2 implementation. This feels like a rat's nest and I hope they figure it out soon. https://x.com/theo/status/2075746766734180779/photo/1
