Apple’s current iPhone support documentation says the new texture and grain controls in Photographic Styles are available on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The controls let users choose texture treatments such as Soft Skin, Glow and Film, adjust their intensity, and add film grain, according to Apple’s guide.
That is the compatibility wording readers should use now. Macworld reported on September 22 that Apple had previously described the controls as available more broadly, then changed its public guidance. Apple’s current guide does not describe the texture and grain controls as a feature for older iPhones.
What the controls change
Photographic Styles alter selected colors and parts of an image rather than applying a uniform filter, Apple says. Users can select a style in Camera, then tune its appearance. On the supported Pro models, that includes a texture control and a separate Grain option.
The feature has an important capture condition for people who want to revisit a photo later. Apple says cameras on models with the latest generation of Photographic Styles need to use High Efficiency image capture for those styles to remain editable in Photos. That is a requirement about the photo being captured, not a promise that every iPhone running the software receives the texture and grain controls.
The distinction matters because Apple’s product documentation is now more specific than the inherited story angle. For buyers deciding between current iPhone models, the current support page—not an earlier compatibility claim—is the clearest statement of which devices get these particular editing options.
