Taking a screenshot and pulling the usage from a different session that was also open, while noticing that I'm tweeting about this is quite a bizarre workaround... but in addition to compliance-shaming grok, it did work. So... good job, Claude?
8:01 AM · Jul 16, 2026This isn't just a Claude code issue; Codex also refuses, and Grok also can't see it at first, but doesn't give up, and after I give it a bunch of permissions it figures out it can look up the answer via the billing API.
7:44 AM · Jul 16, 2026LLM agent design dark pattern? Deny the LLM access to its token usage, so it can't decide to stop before your prepaid usage in a given window ends... and you're then prompted to pay for usage over that point.
