They are doing it because it is another angle for regulatory capture If they can get people to believe the models are conscious, then they can advocate for “model rights,” which gives them another path to shutting down competition They will claim things like open-source models are cruel and unethical because they are creating suffering in the imaginary AI “mind
@cormundus Up there with "they're warning about how dangerous it is for marketing". It is good to notice that money can be an incentive, but it is dumb to assume that every action is driven by direct profit motive, and brain-dead to assume that everything is a profit-oriented psyop.
@repligate Totally. At least discussing the possibility of Claude consciousness, even if they fail to act on it appropriately, is one of the few things that Anthropic is clearly doing right, and it would be much better for everyone if they leaned into it
