Through a $1 million food security and climate-resilience project, the intervention will begin in Bindawa, Bakori and Kafur LGAs, focusing on prevention, preparedness and sustainable livelihoods. The one-year programme will support 150 farms, rehabilitate at least 12 solar-powered water systems and 150 food-storage facilities, provide 500 hermetic storage bags and equip farmers with climate-smart agricultural practices to reduce losses and strengthen productivity. Beyond farming, the initiative will create temporary employment for 180 people through cash-for-work and support livelihood diversification for about 300 women, with priority given to smallholder farmers and vulnerable households. Implemented by Mercy Corps Nigeria in partnership with Katsina State institutions and development partners, the programme will also generate lessons and evidence to guide potential expansion to other LGAs.
