gemma-4:26b is still my favorite local model (I run it on my Mac Studio).
It's fast and way more capable than you might think. I've been running it since April and
I started using it to process private documents (things I don't want to send to the Big Labs), and now I use it for around 60% of all my queries.
I've tried coding with it (ollama launch claude --model gemma4), but unless you are doing something very simple, it's better to stick to better coding models.
It sort of works for simple changes, explaining what's going on in the code, planning, and low-IQ things, but it's not a coding model.
But for daily use, it's great, and a good way to show the middle finger to Big AI labs who keep stealing your data.
