The camera pairs that lens with a 20-megapixel Type 1 sensor, subject-detection autofocus inherited from Sony's newer full-frame bodies, bursts up to 30 frames per second and 4K video at 120fps. PCMag found the autofocus especially strong for people, animals, birds, insects and vehicles. The body weighs 2.5 pounds, considerably less than a full-frame camera paired with a 600mm telephoto lens.

The all-in-one convenience carries a premium

Sony prices the RX10 V at $2,299.99, more than twice the cost of Nikon's Coolpix P950 in PCMag's comparison. The Nikons also stretch to 2,000mm or 3,000mm equivalent, though their smaller sensors give up image quality and speed. A full-frame camera can resolve more detail at high ISO, but matching the Sony's entire focal range requires multiple lenses and much more weight.

PCMag also notes that the built-in flash from earlier RX10 models is gone and the deep menu system may overwhelm beginners. Its verdict is therefore specific: the RX10 V earns its premium for serious wildlife, sports and travel photographers who value one rugged, fast camera more than maximum reach or interchangeable lenses.
