The National Science Foundation is rolling out a new doctoral training model at research universities. Students will complete dissertation work while embedded with industry partners. The initiative responds to the reality that industry now performs roughly the same volume of basic research as academia. Supporters say it will accelerate American R&D in deep tech, improve alignment between training and employer needs, and increase prosperity for both companies and graduates.
