It’s ok. China doesn’t play fair. If your model of the world is “bad guys will follow our conventions on IP” you will lose. Think adversarially. Now what? - whitelist users - token merchants will find alternative monetization pathways - accept that AI safety as a discipline is basically dead - give the good guys the same tools the bad guys have - if Chinese models go closed source, distill them right back It’s gonna be ok.
We have information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic’s Fable for the development of its K3 model. To do this they developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale distillation against U.S. models, allowing them to quickly switch between multiple methods of access to avoid detection. Moonshot AI has also acquired GB300-equipped servers and has accessed GB300s in Thailand, likely to train its AI models. The United States strongly supports the free and fair development of AI, including a thriving competitive ecosystem that spans frontier models, specialized systems, open-source frameworks, and open-weight models. Legitimate AI distillation used to create smaller, more efficient models plays a vital role in this open innovation ecosystem. However, large-scale, covert industrial distillation aimed at stealing proprietary U.S. technology and undermining American research is unacceptable.
I have no inside information, but every sign so far is that there is growing tension about open weights models between the US & China: the US announcing that they reserve the right to act against distilled models, then saying Kimi distills. Contradictory reports from China, etc.

„sanctions and Entity List designations will be on the table.“ Yeah, bans on Chinese open source are coming. Pretty sure at this point. If Scott Bessent, who pushed through similar measures against Anthropic, raises this as a possibility, we know where things are headed.
