OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT that can lead to another conversation: a chat with an agent sponsored by the business doing the advertising.
The company announced Sponsored Agents on Sept. 16, with testing limited to select U.S. advertisers. Users can choose to ask follow-up questions before heading to the business’s website. OpenAI says the sponsored conversation is labeled and kept separate from both ChatGPT’s independent answers and the user’s original chat.
More tools for the advertiser, too
Alongside the test, OpenAI is adding tools for building and managing campaigns. Advertisers can use natural-language prompts through the Ads Manager plugin to create or change campaigns, examine performance and get recommendations, Reuters reports.
Ads Manager can also suggest text and images using a landing page and campaign objective. An optional customization feature adapts existing ad headlines and descriptions to a conversation’s context and translates them into the user’s preferred language.
ChatGPT ads inside Shopify and HubSpot
OpenAI says businesses can now connect their ChatGPT Ads accounts to HubSpot to create ads, monitor results and follow up on leads.
For retailers, the ChatGPT Ads app’s Shopify listing describes a connection that syncs product catalogs, builds ads from product information and lets merchants manage campaigns without leaving Shopify. It also supports conversion measurement, giving merchants a way to track what happens after an ad interaction.
OpenAI says the app is available to U.S. Shopify merchants. International availability is scheduled to begin Sept. 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads operates.
