US NVIDIA Export Ban Motivates Chinese Engineers, Scoble Warns
The export restrictions forced China to build competing domestic technology stacks.
In a post on X, Robert Scoble argued that U.S. restrictions on Nvidia's best chips for China could backfire by doing what constraints often do in engineering: force tighter work and fresh ideas. To make the point, he repeated a story he said he heard from the original Mac team about Steve Jobs pulling RAM from engineers' computers in 1989. A second quote-post on X pushed the argument further, with Jeffries arguing that export controls hurt American chip companies while giving Chinese engineers and policymakers a bigger reason to build around the limits.
