Foreign nationals make up 60% of advanced STEM (science, tech, engineering, or math) degree students in the U.S. There's bipartisan support to staple green cards to advanced STEM degrees. This would be a brilliant no-brainer move to maintain U.S. tech innovation dominance.

I interacted with Zhilin a few times when he was still a PhD student at CMU while I was working with his amazing advisor @rsalakhu on a grant proposal years ago. I was struck by how sharp, open-minded, and genuinely curious he was, including about comp bio problems outside his area. His success is exceptional - but many international students at CMU and across US universities bring similarly remarkable talent and ambition. People choose where to build their lives and career for many reasons, but growing uncertainty around immigration and international exchange risks making the United States less welcoming and less competitive. More supportive pathways for international talents are essential to the future of US science and innovation.
