Today, we're shipping Ask DoorDash, an ordering agent that makes the @DoorDash app easier to use and discover new places. My favorite use cases include asking the assistant to reorder my usual for office lunches and family nights, prompting it to find me new restaurants similar to what I typically order, and building our family's weekly grocery in a couple of minutes by just talking to it and sharing a few recipes we found online. There's 800K+ items across the DoorDash catalog, and it's been a treat to use the assistant to discover so many new places and just how many things are literally in our backyard!

Today we’re launching Ask DoorDash — a new conversational way to search the app in your own words through chat, voice, a recipe link or photo. Ask DoorDash can build you a grocery cart ~5x faster than doing it manually. It takes a single prompt to complete your cart in under 2 minutes.

In early testing, nearly half of all restaurant orders made with Ask DoorDash were from a place the customer had never ordered from before, and grocery baskets built with Ask DoorDash were over 35% larger than those without. [1/3]

This is great for customers the AI features sound convenient. But what about the Dashers who actually make this company run? We haven’t heard a single word about us. We’re the ones driving through rain, snow, and every kind of hazard, often making less than minimum wage after gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation. We risk accidents and personal injury delivering to strangers’ homes. I dislocated my shoulder after slipping on ice at a delivery, and DoorDash offered zero support. After 3 years and over 6,700 deliveries often 7 days a week I get no meaningful recognition. The Platinum tier rewards drivers who accept the most unprofitable orders, not the most dedicated ones. Why is longevity and reliability ignored? The algorithm constantly manipulates us: lowball offers, pay that only counts from acceptance to drop-off (ignoring the 90% of trips with empty return miles), and pressure to accept 50-cent-per-mile runs just to keep acceptance rates up. A $5 item from 16 miles away with a $1.50 suggested tip is not sustainable. We need fair base pay at minimum $1.50 per mile or base pay + $0.70 per mile + tips to actually cover expenses. The new 10% “gas” adjustment doesn’t replace the promos and boosts that were taken away. Many of us believe DoorDash is simply making more profit by squeezing Dashers harder. Finally, why does DoorDash tolerate widespread account sharing and illegal multi-account operations? In my zone, a large percentage of active Dashers appear to be using shared or fake accounts, which hurts legitimate drivers. Dashers are the heart of DoorDash. We deserve better pay, real recognition for loyalty, safer conditions, and an algorithm that doesn’t treat us as disposable. Tony, we’d love to hear how you plan to address these issues for the people who keep the wheels turning.

@t_xu @DoorDash pretty interesting. i would’ve thought the future was for ChatGPT to build this experience in their app & connect it to DoorDash. do u think that’s where things will head or AskDoorDash is here to stay?

@t_xu @DoorDash so you're saying before this launch doordash was a unusable app? and with this new ai integration it will become usable again?

@t_xu @DoorDash Is this where things landed after Zesty was wound down? Conviction in the feature but not the need for a new surface? Would love to hear more on that

@paularambles i hate that companies keep going in this direction, id rather them make mcp/connectors/apis so you can just chat from your preferred AI and get integrations into their product.
