I need to replace my iPhone. Should I get an iPhone or something else? What's the best Android phone right now? Is there an "AI phone" I should get?
AI safety communicator Rob Miles details using Claude Opus to modify Android software via USB debugging
He found Claude Opus performs decently at executing the modifications

@binarybits My suggestion is a flagship Android, because:
iOS users don't realize what a big disadvantage they're at by not being able to have Claude write custom apps for them on a whim
@binarybits More broadly, being able to plug in your phone over usb in debug mode and just tell Claude what you want to be different about it. Shame about Mythos, I bet it would be great at this, never got to try it. But Opus is decent at it
@binarybits My suggestion is a flagship Android, because:

@binarybits It's a bad time to buy an Android phone with the Pixel 11 being announced in 2 months. If the replacement is urgent, buy a used unlocked Pixel 9 on Swappa, see if you can make the switch from iPhone to Android, then trade it in when the 11 is announced.

@binarybits I think Pixels are a better value. But one infuriating downside that makes it hard to recommend switching, is that android still doesn't work well in group text conversations with people on iphones. Many of them will get mad at you and/or exclude you from group chats for it.

@binarybits As an avid Apple user, and AI guy, I say wait until new models in the fall. My limited experience with the new iOS 27 developer beta has me ready to say that Apple is on the precipice of getting their shit together on AI.

@binarybits Curious your take if you get an Android. I did Androids for years but they always seemed to instantly give me this "storage low" message like... within weeks. Even when I bought really fancy ones. Wonder if they still do that? I quit Androids in 2017 so it's been a while.

@binarybits New iPhones tend to come out in the fall, so wait until then.

@binarybits For a phone that runs local AI easily you should look for more RAM. Honor magic 8 easily wins with 24 GB RAM and looks like an iPhone with pill notch. https://www.ebay.com/itm/267559344111 If you want an overall AI experience you should look into S26 ultra or Pixel (comes with free Gemini pro)

@binarybits I'm getting one those big foldables next time. Old eyes, fat fingers.

@binarybits I don't see how anyone cannot be using a folding phone. I've been on one for 7 years. To be fair, at first they were a bit bulky, but my new Moto razr Fold is the thickness and weight of a regular phone. And, unlike the Galaxy fold has pen support
