AWS Draws Criticism for Rare Public Postmortems After Billing Glitch
Reactions from ranked influencers
3 postsGiven how embarrassing this outage was for AWS (and every one of their customers), the least I’d expect is a *public* postmortem AWS HATES making postmortems public, even for global service outages like this one would be considered (only 3 public postmortems the last 4 years!)
Typo alert: Some customers saw quadrillion-dollar AWS billing estimates today. Slight miscalculation on our end (very slight 😅). We're fixing it now. No action needed on your end. Sorry for the confusion. Real question: what will you do with those trillions instead?
Here’s all the public postmortems ever published AWS https://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/technology/pes/ AWS has outages far more frequently but most are just not published in public This billing gone wrong is a global outage (impacted each and every AWS customer) & thus meets AWS’s threshold to publish
Lack of empathy indeed 👎 Cloud bill blowing up thanks to attacks or hacks happens, incl on AWS so joking about it is poor form Esp when they probably are not laughing when people ask “cool so where’s the postmortem? Did AI-assorted code cause this embarrassing outage?”
@GergelyOrosz The least I'd expect is not making fun of an event which has caused massive stress for their customers.
