Tencent is preparing a two-currency bond sale of about $5 billion to help finance artificial-intelligence spending, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with private discussions between the company and fixed-income investors. The deal could be priced as early as October 13, but its size and terms had not been finalized.
Dollars and offshore yuan
The proposed offering would include $1.5 billion to $2 billion across dollar-denominated tranches, according to Bloomberg’s sources. Another 20 billion to 25 billion yuan, or about $3 billion to $3.7 billion, would come from offshore yuan notes.
That mix would let Tencent borrow from investors in two markets while matching different funding needs. A term sheet reviewed by Reuters indicated that the company was considering longer maturities, Finimize reported, including possible 10- and 20-year dollar notes and 10- and 30-year offshore-yuan notes. Final maturities and the split between currencies would depend on market conditions.
Funding a bigger AI buildout
Tencent said its capital expenditures more than doubled in the first half of the year to 96.3 billion yuan, or $14.4 billion, according to Finimize. That spending covers the computing equipment, software and data centers needed to train and operate AI systems.
Longer-dated debt can reduce how often a borrower must refinance, but investors usually demand compensation for committing money for decades. The sale’s eventual coupons and spreads would therefore show how much investors want to be paid for financing Tencent’s multiyear AI expansion. Until the bonds are priced, the roughly $5 billion figure remains a plan rather than completed funding.
