2:52 PM · Jul 15, 2026Dostoevsky mapped two AI futures I care about: The first is the Grand Inquisitor -- freedom is a burden people hate carrying, so the church takes it from them out of love and they are grateful. This is the pitch of every AI assistant, who like a more sophisticated version of the priest, will do the deciding and you will be happier for it The second is from the Underground Man -- I would rather wreck my life on purpose than be a piano key played by someone else. This is when you rebel at the notion of AI deciding for you, recoil when it knows you too well, or refuse to use it altogether, to your detriment Total surrender (Inquisitor) leaves you comfortable and de-humanized while total refusal (Underground) leaves you free and ruined. The only livable position is in between, to let the machine do the work but keep the judgment @jamespoulos @MTSlive
