Intel stock surged up to 15% on the news
Users are celebrating Google's multi-million TPU order for Intel as major validation of its foundry tech and a potential comeback after years of struggles.
SITUATION UPDATE: Google has placed an order with Intel to manufacture more than 3 million TPUs in 2028, per The Information.
Intel shares jumped on the report that Google and Nvidia are testing it as a backup foundry, with Google already ordering more than three million TPUs for 2028.
The move is less about an Intel turnaround and more about TSMC's capacity crunch, since its leading-edge and advanced-packaging lines are fully booked in the AI boom. Intel's opening is EMIB packaging plus early 18A trials, which would make it a credible second source if SK Hynix's memory tests work out. Do we see a big intel comeback?
As Jukan wrote here, this is a packaging order win, not a fab production win Mediatek isn't using IFS front end
Google has placed an order for Intel to manufacture 3 million TPUs. The Information broke the news this morning, so if you are wondering why Intel's stock is skyrocketing (again) that's why. The US Government's 10% stake is paying off quite well. Nothing but good news since then.
The Information reports that Google has picked Intel to manufacture 3M+ Google TPUs in 2028.
Great win for Intel foundry that would make Intel a factory for one of Nvidia’s biggest AI challengers.
Intel’s foundry bet is to become a second source for those chips, which matters because relying too heavily on TSMC creates a supply choke point for Google, Nvidia, Apple, Tesla, and others.
Rising chip demand from the AI boom has made it hard for TSMC to secure enough supply, pushing several major AI chip design firms toward Intel.

Of course they are. If you have any inkling about geopolitics, this would be the most rational and reasonable thing for them to be doing.
NVIDIA is rumored to be in the preliminary stages of a deal with Intel as well.

@MTSlive seems like a lot, but to become proper K1-K2 civilization, we need billions of GPUs, TPUs

@zephyr_z9 They do, they are actually the first Intel Foundry customer, using Intel 16 produced in Ireland for their Wi-Fi chips. Soon, MTK will use more advanced nodes and more capacity from Intel, mark my words.

@IntelProMUltra Bro, I don't care about Wifi chips AFAIK they are not using IFS front end for v8/v9

@kimmonismus Ngl intel’s redemption story going hard, i just hope they dont give up on consumer gpus. Its good market gap for them while everyone is focused on AI chips.

@zephyr_z9 So the packaging win is distinct from fab production
Mediatek targeting packaging could be IFS initial foothold
