@Kangwook_Lee Congratulations, very proud of you!!
1/ In 2006, I entered KAIST as an undergraduate.
During my very first week, my advisor taught me information theory 😅. He spent two hours straight lecturing Huffman codes, lol...
That session changed the direction of my life and eventually led me to a PhD at the intersection of information theory and machine learning at Berkeley. :-)
2/ In 2016, I returned to KAIST as a researcher, as part of fulfilling my 3-year military service requirement.
I spent three wonderful years there doing research on deep learning, learning from great colleagues, and watching deep learning & AI move quickly from many different angles.
3/ Now in 2026, I am excited to share that I have recently joined the External Advisory Board of the KAIST College of AI 🥳
It feels very special to be connected to KAIST again in this new role.
KAIST College of AI is Korea’s first AI college, and it is starting with four departments, covering core AI, systems and hardware, AI transformation across domains, and the broader future of AI in society.
4/ As a proud KAIST alumnus, I am very happy to be able to contribute in some small way.
KAIST has shaped my path many times: as an undergrad, as a researcher, and now as someone hoping to support its next chapter in AI.
I have been lucky to work across academia and industry, and across both Korea and the US.
I hope that my mixed background can help me offer useful perspectives to students and faculty thinking about research, careers, and the future of AI. Most of all, I hope I can help inspire and motivate the next generation of students studying AI at KAIST. Go KAIST!
p.s. wait, what about Y2036 :P?
