Apple’s new CEO is reportedly reshaping the company to move faster and cut management layers

Bloomberg reports that new Apple CEO John Ternus is moving quickly to remake the company around faster product development, a broader device lineup and a leaner structure with more weight on engineering, offering an early look at how he plans to lead after Tim Cook’s long tenure at the top (Bloomberg). Apple declined to comment to Bloomberg.

Among the ideas reportedly being discussed internally are reducing Apple’s dependence on its traditional spring and fall release cadence and removing some middle-management layers that sit between engineers and senior executives (Bloomberg). Bloomberg says Ternus has internally argued that Apple needs to introduce products more quickly and be more experimental to stay competitive in the AI era.

Management cuts are already touching hardware engineering

Bloomberg reports that in the last two weeks Apple’s hardware engineering division began dismissing a number of engineering program managers, or EPMs, roles long central to coordinating product schedules and cross-team work (Bloomberg). The report says the cuts included several program managers and roughly half a dozen directors, one of Apple’s more senior employee levels.

Some affected employees were reportedly given only a few weeks to find other jobs inside Apple. Those who do not land internal roles will be laid off later this year, Bloomberg reports.

The report also says Apple has been carrying out small layoffs across multiple teams in recent months, a change from a company where such cuts were once relatively rare. Bloomberg adds that many employees believe more layoffs could come later this year or early next year.
