Apple unveiled the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display on Oct. 28, adding touch input to the Mac for the first time. The 14- and 16-inch laptops combine a tandem OLED screen with a thinner, lighter design. Preorders opened the same day, with availability beginning Nov. 6.
The change follows years of Apple resisting touchscreen laptops. The Verge recounts Steve Jobs’ objections to their ergonomics and the company’s later experiment with the Touch Bar, a separate strip above the keyboard.
Apple is presenting touch as another way to use the Mac. In an , CEO John Ternus described it as “first and foremost an indirect input device,” built around its keyboard and trackpad. He said touch could be useful at particular moments, and that Apple wanted to add it without making the laptop thicker or heavier.

The screen supports swiping through webpages, pinching to zoom and dragging slides between presentations. Apple also describes creative uses such as playing software instruments onscreen and testing touch interactions in iPhone and iPad apps. macOS translates touches into clicks, allowing many existing apps to work with the screen immediately. Apple lists dedicated touch support for more third-party apps, but its announcement’s footnotes put those apps’ availability later this year.
WIRED’s Steven Levy also observed interface changes during an Apple demonstration: menu items expand for finger selection, and window controls grow when touched.
The PROLED XDR display uses tandem OLED technology. Apple advertises peak HDR and SDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits and an adaptive refresh rate reaching 120Hz. A Dynamic Island replaces the camera notch, and the Apple logo on the lid lights up again. The Verge’s launch coverage details the display and design changes.
The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, while the 16-inch weighs 4 pounds, according to Apple. The laptops retain three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. MacRumors’ specifications rundown covers the slimmer enclosure and connections.
The touchscreen models use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips as the preceding MacBook Pros. Configurations reach up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. Ars Technica reports that the display is the main change over the preceding models.
U.S. pricing starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model and $3,399 for the 16-inch. M5 Max configurations start at $4,499 and $4,799, respectively, before memory or storage upgrades. Apple’s pricing list gives the four starting prices.
The new touchscreen laptops join a lineup that still includes the existing mini-LED MacBook Pros and the newly announced M6-powered 14-inch model, MacRumors reports.
