Bastrop, Texas will soon become home to one of the largest solar cell and wafer production facilities in North America with @SpaceX's new investments in the area, creating thousands of jobs.

The solar facility is already under construction, and the AI sat facility is expected to start initial production by the end of 2027.

Many users praised SpaceX's Bastrop expansion into solar and AI satellite production for its bold vision, speed, and US manufacturing benefits, while others called the project dumb, wasteful of land, or poorly planned.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX Aren’t solar cells supposed to be a Tesla thing???

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX whereas I can support solar cells & solar energy, lithium re-charge, I question other portions of @elonmusk focus. Using the moon as a base? big expense & subject to meteorites destroying all of it. EARTH clean-up should be a priority.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX But building it on farmland? Why, because we have too much food and food security? Make that make sense, please.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX SpaceX and Tesla always have that cross-pollination going on. If they need specialized cells for Starlink or Mars, it’s way more efficient to just build them in-house. Texas is winning big right now.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX Whoa… Bastrop, Texas is about to change BIG time. A massive solar cell and wafer production site is going up, and it’s not small-scale at all we’re talking about core solar tech being built right there from the ground up.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX The only think I am missing is the parking. Whether that is an indication of Optimus numbers or not is something to look out for.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX This site layout is missing a number of key process facilities if it is truly going to capture the entire supply chain not to mention the water/cooling infrastructure. Only the “pretty” buildings are shown.

@SawyerMerritt @SpaceX This is very sad. Beautiful farmland being destroyed. Why isn't a city like Flint MI considered? Where industry has already developed?

Cybercab Austin should branch out to Bastrop, and College Station. Set up a hub at the Walmart in Bastrop, one at the Walmart in Giddings, and one at College Station.

Subsidize a cheap ride between the school and the factories. If I was an engineer at Texas A&M I would absolutely want to intern there at any of the SpaceX facilities, and its a good flex to attract engineering talent.

There is natural traffic flow between Bastrop, the airport, and Austin. A quick airport drop off with a cybercab, Robovans & cabs for workers between Austin and Bastrop, then out to the factories.

All these investments of spaceX and Tesla should have been in California and it was designed that way but, the California politicians, esp. Newsom, drove Elon away in these years since 2020. The f. word to Elon by the rude asssamlywoman was the last straw. California has lost so much jobs and tax revenue. California residents have suffered so much due to the past jobs. They have to pack their belongs and move away from their beloved weather and locations. Californians, please wake up and vote the left and liberals out of Sacramento. Don't support them to waste your money just for the short and small social welfare. It is better have good jobs around you than obtaining food stamps and freebies.
