TLDR

A meme posted by Coder_boy contrasts traditional coders methodically painting a car hood with a vibe coder using an iron eraser. Ralph states that people on the platform make claims about AI coding yet nobody fully knows what they are doing. Lars Jansen describes AI creating a new class of developer who describes systems, tests outputs, and iterates with models without knowing every language feature. Ben Dickson notes technical product managers stand to gain from AI coding agents. David McLaughlin adds these are developers at a different technical level focused on architecture and user needs. s9tpepper compares the result to an IKEA closet builder versus a carpenter. Rebelmindx suggests UI/UX designers turned vibe coders will thrive.

@oldstackjournalI think AI coding is creating a new class of software developer. People who’d never call themselves programmers, but can describe a system properly, test it, argue with the model, spot when something smells wrong and keep pushing until they get what they want. They don't know every language feature or framework convention. But they ship real software anyway. Seems to be annoying the hell out of quite a few pre-ai programmers😂20d
@s9tpepper@oldstackjournal They are software developers the same way someone that designs and builds a closet system at IKEA is a carpenter. Sure, they both output working products, but there is still a difference. That difference may be worse or better, but it’s not the same.20d
@rebelmindx@oldstackjournal Its the UI/UX designers turned vibe coders that are going to thrive in this new paradigm shift in the industry.20d
@dsmclTrue. Not "builders" in the sense of non-technical -- but a different "level" of technical. Good understanding of systems, engineering principles, architecture decision tradeoffs, user needs -- but not necessarily a coder.20d
@ralphghannamPeople on this platform make all sorts of claims regarding AI in coding I can assure nobody knows what they’re fully doing You’re not behind or doing it wrong20d
@bendee983This is basically a product manager with enough technical knowledge and experience. Technical PMs stand to gain a lot from AI coding agents. Accordingly, software engineers with product management experience can really boost their productivity with AI coding agents. It’s the ones with one-dimensional skills that will be frustrated the most.20d
