Petra Power makes solid oxide fuel cells, ceramic devices that TechCrunch reports convert fuels such as natural gas into electricity without combustion. Founder Aaron Goodman told the outlet that the design can lower fuel costs, emissions and equipment footprint compared with traditional power sources.
Two early markets
The company is targeting data centers and the Defense Department. Goodman said Petra is working with neoclouds and other infrastructure providers, aiming for an initial deployment in 2028 and full-scale production in 2029. He also said Petra has no firm hyperscaler agreements.
For defense use, Petra envisions supplying auxiliary power for land vehicles when their main engines are off. The product has not been deployed on a live vehicle and remains in testing while the government decides whether to proceed. TechCrunch reported that Petra has received nearly $9 million in Defense Department contracts.
