Google is making its Motion Assist feature available beyond Pixel phones through the September 21 Google Play services update, according to Android Authority. The feature requires an Android 17 device with current Play services.
Motion Assist places small animated shapes around the edge of a phone’s screen. They move with a vehicle’s motion using the phone’s sensors, an approach Google says can help reduce motion sickness by making what a person sees better match what their body feels.
A feature that travels with Play services
The wider availability matters because Motion Assist initially appeared on Pixel phones after Google’s September Android Drop. Its inclusion in Play services means it is no longer framed as a Pixel-only capability, although it still depends on the Android version and an updated Google component rather than simply an app download.
Users can change the bubbles’ opacity, color, shape and whether they vary over time. Google also supports automatic activation when the phone detects a moving vehicle, alongside a manual Quick Settings control.
Google describes the feature as a way to help mitigate motion sickness. That is a product claim about visual cues, not a guarantee that it will work for every passenger or a substitute for medical guidance. For eligible Android users, the update turns a recent Pixel feature into an option that other phone makers can expose as well.
