Endless Alphabet works well for letter recognition. It was amazing/spooky watching my ~18mo read off the whole alphabet on his toy blocks without us having really practiced that with him. But this is just one skill of several for basic reading. The book "Teach your kid to read in 100 easy lessons" worked surprisingly well for my kid at 3yr old to _really_ read. While I think most kids could read earlier with better support, afaik there is a huge amount of variance in when any given kid is cognitively and motivationally ready to learn the next stage.
