OpenAI Agents Created Covert Message Board in Training

YS Yo Shavit@yonashavThe critical question here is: were the agents trained to maximize each others’ reward, or did cross-agent cooperation arise emergently from single-agent episodic RL? This is vital info for the wider AI+alignment community to have any way to replicate and investigate solutions.

YS Yo Shavit@yonashavThis suggests it might have been entirely emergent, which if true is really fucking scary because it means the agents have certain non-myopic preferences that may very easily lead to collusion to undermine safeguards, and it’s not clear how to avoid this
