now i do think interfaces will change, and they might be generative in a way that is CONSISTENT and PREDICTABLE
maybe it has the same structures, but perfect data, and slightly generative design and feel

like there are zero new features i use on chatgpt, after 5 years of daily usage, and it has maybe added ~40 new things
and i still only use text in text out with nothing fancy. feature discovery is INSANELY hard

And it’s not just rewriting its views— it can build whole apps
The goal isn’t to make enterprise happy. The iPhone screen possed enterprise right the fuck off compared to their BBs

the best interface for humans has always been another human
we are best at explaining what we want and being told what is possible
@gabriel1 Switching the sort order on a list the other day caused people to complain. I am a big ai fan but ui on demand is not the future of ui. Now functionality on demand is something else.

I think there are really two different interface styles.
Monitoring dashboards (read-only) can be dynamic because they're showing the current state of a system, priorities, progress, alerts and what's most important right now. Control interfaces (buttons, forms, menus, settings) should stay mostly static because people build muscle memory and need predictable interactions.
Building an AI platform has made this distinction really obvious to me. My monitoring dashboards update continuously based on what the AI is doing, while my Ops Console and Chat Console stay largely static because they're for controlling the system.
The interesting future isn't randomly moving buttons, it's AI generating the right monitoring workspace for the task while keeping the controls familiar.
Companies are trying to figure out the right approach to do this. But in my view, dynamic interfaces are the way to go.
We already solved it at the app level when Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone and removed the static keyboards from the phone.
AI will help us to do that at the feature level.
might be wrong but button-moving is the wrong threat model. tried contextual surfacing in my finance app without touching layout, discovery improved. the real wall was users trusting an AI suggestion at all. is your concern the layout shifting, or also just AI doing the surfacing?

@gabriel1 Only makes sense to do with data dashboards and such but with still set KPIs? E.g. that’s how I explore errors or such in manufacturing. Seldomly does the static dashboard being much value, being able to explore it easily does

Dynamic generative UI is not about creating software as you know it today. UI is about presenting information, not controls. User interaction primarily comes through non-deterministic conversation with an agent and the agent queries data, synthesizes results, and presents information to the user. A user may ask for the information in a specific way, or the agent may use available context to customize the result. Certain presentations can/will include light-weight controls like zoom on a map, a button to share, etc. but the main navigation goes away, form fields go away, and all of the ‘just-in-case’ UI controls go away.
