OpenAI’s claimed math results draw scrutiny as researchers question proof, process, and oversight

The immediate flashpoint is OpenAI’s claimed solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a long-standing mathematical puzzle. But WIRED reports that the company’s 166-page proof remains under peer review, and experts have not yet confirmed that it is valid. That uncertainty has left mathematicians trying to assess not just whether the proof works, but how it was produced and what, if anything, it teaches humans about the underlying problem.

WIRED also reports criticism of OpenAI’s lack of transparency about how the proof was reached. Some mathematicians have argued that the process has been too opaque for the field to evaluate cleanly, and New York University mathematician Tristan Buckmaster suggested OpenAI may have drawn on his and others’ work without proper attribution. Researchers quoted by WIRED also questioned how autonomous the system really was and how much human scaffolding may have been required.

A new advisory group, and new confusion

OpenAI has responded to criticism by forming an advisory group of mathematicians, WIRED reports. The Verge reports that on September 21, prominent researchers announced the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, or AGMAI, describing it as an independent body that would advise OpenAI and other frontier AI labs on reviewing and communicating emerging mathematical results.

At the same time, The Verge reports that OpenAI emphasized limits on the group’s role, saying AGMAI would not be responsible for advising on the pace of the company’s internal mathematical progress.

Instead of clearing the air, AGMAI’s debut appears to have added another layer of confusion. The Verge reports that many mathematicians first learned about the group through OpenAI’s own, much louder announcement, which led some to wonder whether the advisory body was truly independent.

That skepticism was sharpened by AGMAI’s own explanation of its origins. As The Verge reports, the group’s website says OpenAI initially approached some eventual members about forming an advisory board before those mathematicians decided to organize independently and invite others.

More than 100 additional claimed results

The stakes are growing because OpenAI is signaling that the Navier-Stokes claim may be only the start. The Verge reports that OpenAI says its unreleased internal model has now resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics.

That claim is helping drive anxiety among researchers about future announcements. The Verge describes dread among mathematicians who fear a wave of disclosures could abruptly overtake areas they have spent years or decades studying.
