Claim Internet and Smartphones Ran Without Data Centers Draws Quick Corrections
Replies on X assert that data centers are essential to the internet.
TLDR
Nicholas J. Stelzner posted that the internet has run for over 30 years and smartphones for 20 without data centers. Tom Pappert replied that the internet is data centers. Bad Hombre stated the first data center was built in 1946 on the UPenn campus and that the internet cannot exist without them. Johnny Maga called the claim blatantly false. Captive Dreamer asked Grok whether an app like X relies on data centers.

DeeBunker 🇺🇸🦅@23SkidooSt@johnnymaga Nobody said the internet doesn’t need data centers. The argument is about where they’re built and the impact on the communities that host them. Data centers also need electricity. That doesn’t mean we build a power plant in your backyard. Location is the entire point.
JO Joseph@Perma_banned_me@Vpnninja87 @grok @Badhombre You just invalidated yourself. You said it requires a central hub, now you say it requires a direct connection. You have no idea what you're talking about. The Internet does not require a data center. @grok do the lazy work. Explain why he is…
