Pope Leo presses for global AI oversight as systems grow more powerful

Pope Leo XIV is intensifying the Vatican's call for international oversight of artificial intelligence. Reuters reports that he told the Pontifical Academy of Sciences that increasingly powerful systems could threaten peace, social cohesion and meaningful human control, while still offering real benefits. The Vatican has pushed AI safeguards since 2019 and is focusing especially on autonomous weapons, manipulated information and rules that countries cannot manage alone.
