Meta previews Hologram avatars for WhatsApp calls on its glasses
Engadget calls the digital likenesses a notable improvement, while UploadVR found a limitation in its VR demo: the full-body avatar rotated to face the viewer, breaking the illusion when they moved around.
TLDR
UploadVR and Digital Trends report that Meta plans US Early Access for Hologram WhatsApp calls on Ray-Ban Display in fall 2026. After setup using a phone, callers get a shoulders-up digital likeness whose expressions are generated entirely from microphone audio, UploadVR explains.
UploadVR reports that a full-body version is planned for Meta VR Glasses in spring 2027, using headset tracking as well as audio. At launch, those avatars will be generated 3D video—not figures you can walk around and view from different sides.
Meta told UploadVR it plans to upgrade the VR version to fully three-dimensional avatars, including support for group conversations, but gave no timeline.
