over the past ~year most ai discourse, including mine, has shifted pretty hard away from ASI and towards much more concrete and near term scenarios and risks. bio and cyber, economic implications of scalable human level intellectual labor, etc. this is bc these have become undeniable near term factors. they get attention and interest at a level that past discussions didn't, because at this point they're just already happening, and so people can no longer hand wave them away.
but to be clear: just because i'm more rarely talking about it doesn't mean i think there's any real chance things stop there. we will not plateau at human level intelligence. alignment aside, the social and technological implications of ASI are much much greater and much weirder than a mere "cancer and aging get cured and we all get UBI as all current power systems are dramatically reshaped". that's just trivial projection. that's just the starting line.
