OpenAI is reportedly developing an Auto Research Assistant and a lower-cost GPT-5.6 model for release by September

@ChrissGPT Do we realistically expect the Trump admin to allow public release of anything more potent than what we have accessible from the frontier now though? Besides maybe small upgrades like 5.6

@HeluctantlyRere By the time OpenAI releases their fable class of models in July or August, I’d presume they’re talking with the government well in preparation for the future models

GPT-5.6 is an iterative improvement on 5.5. Better model & cheap, but not fable-class.

Doesn’t matter though. The training run they’re actually cooking on is setting them up for the Auto Research Assistant in September.

Which I expect to be out July-August, that will be the actually fable competitor

And then when we start the training run on the Vera Rubin class models we should end the year with some pretty spectacular stuff

It’s going to beat fable on some benches but it’s still going feel small model smell compared to fable

@ChrissGPT Are we sure they won't just skip 5.6 and go for 6? I have a feeling they may capitalise and deploy a bigger model to signal they can compete with Fable if not outright beat it. They already hinted at releasing their general purpose reasoning model not long ago.

General knowledge levels of humans are balanced out by arbitrage. That's how everything works in the world.

I think they just won't come back. Maybe against elite prices.

@VraserX Yes but it will beat fable on around half / less than half of the benchmarks but it’s not fable level in terms of model smell or coding

@ChrissGPT I think 5.6 will be very close to Fable level but much cheaper. They will also release the new voice mode called BiDi that will blow peoples minds. Literally „Her“.
