Scoble Says Functionality Trumps Looks For Snap AR Glasses

Yesterday people sure gave Snap a lot of crap about how their augmented reality glasses look.

It isn't how they look that will get me to buy them. I'm not gonna buy them to be fashionable.

It's what they let you do inside that matters. And that's what everyone is missing.

And that this is the worst these devices will look. In many ways these are really for developers to build the experiences that will matter once they shrink again and get cheaper.

Gotta see a path to getting consumers, even someday in the future. I don't see how Snap gets there. And Meta is a mess internally.

Which is why I'm betting on Google and Apple and watching a range of them coming out of China, where consumers are far more excited by all this stuff than elsewhere.

@Scobleizer I agree that there will at some point be a really good set of glasses with good functions that will attract mass markets

@Scobleizer lol no offense here but I dont care whats inside. they're the gaudiest accessory I've ever seen.

I really admire how you back the companies willing to take real risks and try new things to push us forward. And the "what does it let you do" lens is the right one. Looks get figured out over time. Capability is what actually changes how we live. I think it’s just our society and media that is always quick to try to create negativity because that is what draws the eyes and ears

I wish I had better advice for entrepreneurs/developers.

@Scobleizer every wearable cycle starts with “focus on what it can do.” then adoption data shows people care a lot more about social friction than technical capability

@Scobleizer Agreed they are one possible option. I won't be buying one straight away but I do think it's up to the market to decide and I am tempted.

They definitely do more than flat screen app single screen glasses as Evans demo showed and thats pretty cool.

You assume that they will take long to get small and sexy. They won't.
