Nomad List founder Pieter Levels claims tail-rotor designs make helicopters unsafe, but Palmer Luckey argues multi-rotors are statistically more dangerous

Most of this is not true. I own and fly helicopters and multi-rotors.

Helicopters can fly and land without a tail rotor, and fenestron rotors as on the H160 in the picture are well-protected from hits and functional even after losing blades.

As for safety, compare with commercial helicopter flights. Comparing commercial jetliners with amateur helicopter pilots and dangerous emergency medical services/utility work/etc is skewed. And multi-rotors have much worse safety stats, whatever hope there is for the future.

Even airlines in Nepal have better safety odds than an average helicopter

@seanboisselle @levelsio You can glide in a helicopter. Every helicopter practices this hundreds of times during training.

@levelsio My ex’s mom worked in insurance, she made me promise to never ride in a helicopter or 3 wheeled vehicle. I never understood helicopters either, maybe for war where there isn’t an alternative but doesn’t make sense for civilian transport.

More billionaires die by helicopter than by anything else*.

*I have no data to support this claim, but it’s certainly how it seems.
