To be clear on my hesitation: it was NOT about the language, but that the company translating it is a Russian entity (in Saint Petersburg). And thus the book generates revenue in Russia, indirectly funding the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine.

I received an $800 advance so far, all of it transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

@GergelyOrosz Languages have nothing to do with wars. Russian is spoken in many more countries than Russia. On that line , how many more languages should be banned from your book ? All of them with the exception of catalan ?

This book was contracted to be translate to Russian *by a Russian company* that is based in Russia.

This means that a good chunk of revenue from the translation will stay in Russia, and thus indirectly fund Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

It was my hesitation. I don't want to support Russia's *war* on Ukraine.

@GergelyOrosz So let’s recap, you: - “hesitated” based on a bullshit assumption (non-gov, non-mil company’s revenue somehow funding the war) - decided to let it slide BUT also throw translators under the bus by _announcing_ you’ve donated proceeds to UA army which is a criminal offense in RF

@GergelyOrosz If spreading the knowledge requires russian translation then it is the one and only way of doing this (by donating all money to Ukrainian Armed Forces). But, I do believe this translation is not really required.

I regularly see Russian IT devs on LinkedIn working on military and propaganda projects (VK, Yandex). The less access they have to knowledge, the better it is for the rest of the world.
