Ethernet cables can carry video, audio and power with the right gear

Engadget explains that Cat5e, Cat6 and similar cables can carry video over longer distances with HDMI extenders or multiple channels of analog audio with adapters. Power over Ethernet (PoE) can deliver both data and power to compatible cameras or Wi-Fi access points. These uses are not always the best fit: many HDMI extenders lack support for formats such as 4K at 120Hz, and PoE requires compatible equipment.
